Small Dogs on New York City List of Dogs With Most Bites

As I was in the midst of settling a dog bite case for a client (a case in which a child was bitten in the face resulting in permanent scars), this article appeared in the New York Post listing
the five dogs with the highest number of bites and the record number of bites in 2010. Least surprising? That the pit bull tops the list for most bites recorded in New York City. Most surprising? That tiny Chihuahuas and Shi Tzus are in the top five. Also making the list were Rotweillers and standard poodles.
I continue to see
dog bite cases come into my firm which is unfortunate as so many of these dog attacks are foreseeable and preventable. Most pet owners are responsible but there are owners out there who disregard leash laws and in some cases, ignore their dog's prior aggression. I feel strongly that owners need to be extra vigilant about their animals no matter what the breed. And that goes for me as well, as the owner of a sweet, slow and somewhat overweight yellow lab.
