On December 18, 2012 Matrixx Initiatives, the manufacturer of Zicam voluntarily recalled one lot of Zicam® Extreme Congestion Relief nasal gel. The manufacturer took the initiative after finding a small amount of Burkholderia cepacia in a sample that was taken from the affected lot in a routine review at the manufacturing plant. Further tests on the same lot have not shown any more evidence of the organism.
According the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Burkholderia cepacia only poses a small risk to healthy individuals; however, when Burkholderia cepacia is contained in a nasal spray, it could cause upper airway colonization which can lead to respiratory infections in those patients with a compromised immune system, or in those who have chronic lung conditions such as cystic fibrosis.
The FDA says that the organism is resistant to a number of antibiotics and it may be difficult to eliminate if an infection begins. As of the FDA's update on December, 18, 2012, Matrixx had not received any reports of illness.
The recalled product is a non-drip liquid nasal gel which is used as a nasal decongestant. It is packaged in a 0.5 ounce spray battle that is contained inside an outer carton, bearing NDC number 62750-005-10, lot 2J23, Expiration 09/15.
Other recent dangerous drug recalls from the FDA include hydrocodone bilatrate and acetaminophen tablets by UDL Laboratories, Inc., and by Qualitest, as well as Carboplatin injections by Hospira.
